Barnwell Tabby Dig

Unearthing the Past on Hilton Head Island

In the spring and summer of 2019, USCB anthropology professor Dr. Kimberly Cavanagh and her students spent almost every weekend excavating at the Barnwell Tabby site on Hilton Head Island . They found pieces of charcoal, animal bones, glass, pottery fragments and other clues to human activity on the site over centuries. The artifacts they found are being processed and analyzed.

“One of the most meaningful memories I have from my time at USCB was participating in a community-based project led by Dr. Cavanagh on Hilton Head. We were able to use our research and archaeological skill sets to give back to the community, encapsulating the ways the disciplines of History and Anthropology have meaningful applied uses today and in the future.”
