Carmen Brown Farrell, PhD

I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. I completed my doctoral studies at the University of Alabama studying Experimental Psychology with a Developmental Science concentration and a Statistics Minor. I also received my MA from the University of Alabama and completed my undergraduate degree at North Carolina State University.  My research interests are twofold. First, the teaching of psychology itself is a fascination of mine, and I have embraced new formats of classes to engage active learning in as many different ways as possible. Psychology is an incredibly exciting discipline to teach because there are so many real world, everyday life applications of it. I do my best to integrate knowledge so that it is relevant and interesting for students to engage with.  I am always looking for new teaching techniques as well as writing up experiences I have had with various pedagogies. Second, I love to get undergraduates involved in doing research, and I have a research lab on campus, the Lab for Early Affective Development (LEAD), where we explore young children's developing affective knowledge and regulation, and how that impacts their success in various domains, including school readiness. It is my hope that my research can better inform us of the relations among various social-emotional skills and see how those relations impact important outcomes, both for typically developing children as well as those who are at risk due to various environmental and/or biological factors. I love working at USCB and helping students to engage with psychological research firsthand, with many who are doing it for the very first time!
