My name is Rebecca Krygiel Capello. I went to the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a Minor in Spanish. I went to graduate school at King’s College London, in London, England, where I majored in Human and Applied Physiology. My favorite area of Physiology is Environmental Physiology, which is learning how the body responds and adapts to extreme environments, such as diving, altitude, and space. My experience learning about environmental physiology was fun! I pulled +2.8Gz in a human centrifuge and conducted hypoxia experiments in a hypobaric chamber at the Royal Air Force Centre for Aviation Medicine. I consider myself a lifelong student. I have been published in the journal Life Sciences in Space Research. My research looked at which upper body muscles were used the most during external chest compressions in simulated hypogravity. This research could help future astronauts or space tourists in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest in space.
